Deep BOMs Change Everything
Most discussions about manufacturing systems assume something simple: buy parts, assemble product, ship it. That’s not how many real manufacturing environments work. Some products are built from hundreds or even thousands of engineered components, layered across multiple levels — electronic control modules, precision optics, fabricated chambers, gas delivery systems, proprietary assemblies, and in-house machined components mixed with outsourced builds.
Each level adds complexity. Engineering revisions ripple through the entire product structure, and a small change at the component level can affect planning, procurement, inventory, and service. Most people underestimate how much operational discipline that requires.
Manufacturing systems don’t struggle because the software is bad. They struggle because the product itself is complex. The deeper the product structure, the more disciplined the business system must be.
