Before You Add AI, Fix the Process
A plant manager once showed us a new AI forecasting dashboard — beautiful charts, confident numbers. Then we asked where the inventory data came from. Three different spreadsheets, two people who usually kept them updated, and a bill of materials nobody had touched since 2019.
The AI wasn’t wrong. It was just very confident about garbage.
AI can summarize, predict, automate, and recommend. What it cannot do is fix a broken operating model. If your BOMs are inaccurate, AI will scale bad data. If your inventory transactions are inconsistent, AI will produce confident nonsense. If every department has its own spreadsheet, AI will not magically create one version of the truth. If nobody owns the process, AI will just make the confusion faster.
Manufacturers don’t need to avoid AI. They need to stop treating it as a shortcut around process discipline. Fix the workflow. Clean up the master data. Define ownership. Standardize the rules. Only then does AI become genuinely useful — otherwise it’s just automation layered on top of chaos.
