The System Mistake That Happens Before the System

One of the biggest system mistakes in manufacturing has nothing to do with the system itself. It starts much earlier. The company starts growing, orders increase, lead times get longer, inventory starts piling up — and eventually leadership says, ‘maybe we need a new system.’

But the real problem usually isn’t the system. It’s that nobody ever stopped to answer a few basic questions about how the business actually runs: what really drives our margins, where do things break down in the shop or the office, and what information do leaders actually need every week to run the business? If those answers aren’t clear, a new system will usually make things worse.

Systems don’t fix messy operations. They expose them — bad BOMs, spreadsheet workarounds, three different ways of doing the same job. The companies that succeed understand that the system isn’t an IT project. It’s the operating system for how the business runs, and the most important decisions about it usually don’t belong to IT. They belong to leadership.
