The Locked Cabinet Nobody Talks About

More than once, we’ve found a locked metal cabinet on the production floor — no label, no system record, just operators quietly building their own private inventory because they’d stopped trusting the system to protect production.

Most owners and COOs never see it. They only see what comes next: shortages, expediting, missed shipments, and a firefighting culture nobody can seem to fix. By then, the shadow system has usually existed for years.

People don’t build workarounds because they want to. They build them because operational trust broke somewhere, and nobody noticed until the symptoms showed up on a P&L. Once that trust breaks, the business stops running on process discipline and starts running on human survival instincts — and that’s a hard thing to fix with software alone.
